Amit Chaudhary, the co-founder of Lenskart, is widely known in the Indian startup arena as a maverick leader and great motivator. Along with Peyush Bansal and Sumeet Kapahi, he had launched Lenskart in October 2010 with a vision to give Indians a better vision. Back in 2010, when digital India was still a dream, they took a brave step and launched their eyewear retail chain online. Due to their perseverance and far-sightedness, Lenskart is India’s fastest growing eyewear business today. But behind the success, there is always struggle in the roots. It was a tough job as well as a way out of the league for Amit as he was a tech graduate.
Early Life and Lenskart
Amit who is based out of Kolkata did his schooling from Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, a prestigious school in the metro city. He then went on to pursue his engineering from BIT Mesra, Ranchi in Information Technology (I.T.) from 2005 to 2009. His journey from a young student, from BIT, Mesra, to an entrepreneur is quite inspirational.
When people asked him about the idea, strategy, and secret to the success of Lenskart, he once said, “The founding team is most critical. It is immaterial who has what capabilities, who can contribute where…. If there is mutual respect and no ego comes in between – ideas will change, strategies will change daily – but love to make a meaning won’t. Every business person fails and fails daily. In these tough situations and between emotions we get energy and faith of perseverance from each other. The core is just this equation – this genuine love for creation – to not think personal at all but an only organization which comes first. There is no extra skill we need.” It speaks volumes about his commitment, trust, and belief in his team.
Reading is tough
But, no man can do everything. After accomplishing so much with a unique idea, Amit also believes that he is bad at somethings. Many people might be unaware of the fact that completing a book is a challenge for him! He once tweeted his dilemma- “Is there a book to learn how to read books 🙂 failed in reading books all my life!”
Fanboy moment with Rata Tata after Lenskart
During his first year at BIT, he was reading a book titled “Business Maharajas”. While reading he came across a chapter ‘Ratan Tata’ and was deeply inspired by it. It had a great impact on his mind and thought process. Amit himself shared this anecdote when he met Ratan Tata last year and had a fanboy moment with him. And as you would have guessed by now, he never finished that book too! Given his growth trajectory, it won’t be long before he makes it to the future editions of the book.
