Lack of opportunities
Moreover, speaking about the webinar, Mr Virendra Kumar, Founder of Maati Ghar said that the art forms and artists in Jharkhand are currently in a nascent stage. Due to the lack of opportunities and platform, the paintings from Jharkhand are not as famous as compared to other states’ paintings. Three years ago, they came to know about Sohrai paintings when Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about it.” Similarly, other paintings also do not get recognition.
Painters have the tremendous potential to be flag bearers of as famous paintings as Madhubani paintings. The venture Maati Ghar promotes the paintings through online media and exhibitions. Moreover, a lot of students are already receiving training in this art form. Students in the schools are also learning these paintings in traditional style. Even they are not using acrylic or any other artificial colours. Students are making it in a natural way like rubbing stones and extracting colours from flowers, he added. Maati Ghar aims in preserving and promoting traditional paintings like Sohrai, Khovar, Paitkar and Jadupatua. It empowers traditional artisans of Jharkhand.
Artisans facing problems
Ms Alka Singh, Marketing Head of Avika talked about the issues related to rural artisans. Furthermore, she said that these artisans are currently working alongside other 3000 rural women. Few of the issues that rural artisan are facing includes the quality and cost of the product. The cost of the product is high as compared to plastic and other synthetic products. Moreover, an individual makes all the products. Therefore, replication is not possible. Rural women are not trained enough to sell the products online and this is the reason that online selling is not prevalent. Marketing of the product along with its branding is negligible.
“Even banks provide mudra loans but that is not sufficient.” Alka Singh said. She attempts to bring economic empowerment to rural women in Jharkhand. She provides them with a platform to sell Madhubani painting, hand embroidery on apparels, zardozi work on apparels and organic food products like dairy, fresh milk, honey and vermicompost for all plants. Moreover, the college is planning to collaborate with more entrepreneurs in the upcoming future. With collaboration, they aim to help in the development of rural artisans.
