Why “Laxmi” is a damp Squib?

Laxmi starring Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani, is originally a remake of superhit South movie “Kanchana”.  Film has been released on Disney+ Hotstar, last evening. The comedy horror, earlier titled as “Laxmi Bomb” is directed by Raghava Lawrence. Meanwhile after a long wait, audience were excited to watch Akshay Kumar and his magic on the big screen, but all they received is disappointment. The plot of this 2 hour 20 minute drama has been labelled “nonsense” by netizens from beginning to end.

Storyline and Cast:

Akshay plays the role of a Muslim man, Aasif who is married to a Hindu girl, Rashmi played by Kiara. The duo get married by running away from home. And this is another reason the film is being boycotted for portraying “love jihad.” Further with the succeeding storyline, Akshay Kumar gets possessed by the spirit of a transgender person whose name is Laxmi. And from here onwards, actual drama continues when Laxmi wants to seek revenge from all those who wronged her when she was alive. The plot keeps the audience glued with the screen but climax feels abrupt. If we talk about Akshay’s performance, he has given it the kind of brilliance he is known for. But then also weak writing somewhere fails this film. Sharad Kelkar stands out with his surprise performance.

Laxmi movie reviews: Message remains undelivered

Akshay and Sharad did justice to the role of transgenders. The message that the story is trying to give also seems clear which says, acceptance and love for transgenders. The real problem lies in execution. Neither funny nor inspiring and not at all horror, the movie makes a mockery of itself. It looks as if many things in the movie have been assembled, there is no single coherent thought that is delivered here. Movie was meant to break stereotypes but what we see is the same transgender characters clapping and dancing around. The idea looks half-baked.

Similarity with Kanchana:

Director Raghava tried to keep the same prints of the original work while remaking. Kanchana was a humourous film full of horror plus comedy and did a record breaking business in Tamil cinema. Lead character, Raghava was a continuation which was already an established character in a previous film, so Kanchana was a franchise fully in the making. But here in Laxmi, director or the writers are seen repeating the same movie with a handful of character changes and swaps. Moreover netizens are calling it ” the worst movie of 2020.”
