Elon Musk surprised everyone when a Twitter handle called Tesla Club India said that it was hopeful that the company would enter the Indian market. Elon Musk, the Co-founder and CEO of automaker Tesla Inc, on 2nd October 2020, tweeted that the company would enter India “next year for sure”.
All this because of the T-shirt for Tesla
The twitter handle called Tesla Club India asked about Tesla entering the Indian market. The tweet read, “Hey Elon, just thought we’d put this out here”. It further said “We wait and hang on to hope wrt ‘hopeful soon’ for India Tesla entry. Would love to hear of any progress in this regard.” The announcement is the result of a tweet with the pictures of a t-shirt. The T-shirt quoted, ‘India wants Tesla’ and ‘India loves Tesla’ . Musk replied to this tweet.
In response to this tweet, a twitter account said that they are waiting for this piece of news for ages. To this Musk replied “Thanks for waiting”.
Not the First time for such an announcement by Tesla Chief
Such an announcement by Musk is nothing new. Last year in 2019, he talked about high import duties in India. This would make their cars unaffordable amid expectations of the 2020 launch.
Similarly, in the year 2017, he was hopeful about entering India in the summer. However, he later tweeted “Maybe I’m misinformed. But I was told that 30% of parts must be locally sourced. The supply does not yet exist in India to support that.”
Relaxation to Tesla
According to The Hindu report, Musk is in discussion with the Indian government to give them relief on import until a local factory was built. However, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry clarified that there is no minimum sourcing of local components for any foreign company to establish a manufacturing unit.
Tesla was founded in 2003 by a group of engineers. They wanted to prove that people didn’t need to compromise to drive electric – that electric vehicles can be better, quicker, and more fun to drive than gasoline cars. Today, Tesla builds not only all-electric vehicles but also infinitely scalable clean energy generation and storage products. Tesla believes the faster the world stops relying on fossil fuels and moves towards a zero-emission future, the better.
