It’s not only Rahul, but there are also many students like him who grapple with this dilemma. Students are confused, whether to start working after the completion of the board exams or continue further study. While some students do get practical guidance from their parents and teacher, there are a lot many who don’t have this privilege. Those who want to continue higher studies, options are plentiful. For the students who are looking towards a career path, there are many diploma courses which open doors to the professional world.

Here is a list of some of the interesting career options for you –

Diploma courses –

1. Engineering Diploma –

Students can pursue engineering three-year diploma courses after completing the 10th standard. The regular engineering courses, which last six years. This includes two years of classes 11 and 12th apart from four years to complete the complete courses. Students opting for the engineering diploma will get their diploma in engineering degree after three years of study.

2. Laboratory Technician Diploma-

Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) is a 2-year diploma course which can be pursued after class 10. The DMLT course is for students who wish to become a professional laboratory technician, medical technician, medical assistants etc.

3. Diploma in Stenography –

After class 10, students can also opt for a diploma in stenography which is a one-year diploma course. Students who pursue this course will have more scope to get a job as a stenographer in the government sector and the private sector.


4. Diploma in Beauty Culture & Hairdressing –

Diploma in Beauty Culture & Hairdressing is a four-month course. It is one of the most preferred courses among girls. Through this course, participants will be trained in beautician’s skills and they can start their own beauty parlour.

5. Commercial Art –

Diploma in Commercial Art is a 2-year course, helps students to understand the concepts of selling goods and services. Students will be eligible to secure jobs in advertising companies, art studios, publishing houses and fashion houses after successful completion of this course.

6. Art teacher diploma –

Art teacher diploma is a 2-year diploma course. The course is designed to train the candidates in the fundamental and basic principles of visual and design experience. Diploma holders can work as art teachers in schools and other institutes.

After class 10, students can do ITI courses for employment in mechanical engineering and electrical sectors.

Government sector –

1. Indian Navy –

Joining the Navy is a viable and option after the completion of class 10. Candidates who have completed matriculation are recruited as Dock Yard Apprentices, Sailors, Artificer Apprentices, etc. The candidates are selected on the basis of a written examination which is conducted by Navy.

2. Indian Army –

After class 10, candidates can join the Indian Army in various capacities. Candidates are selected only through the written exams. Indian Army Soldier General Duty (N.E.R) examination is conducted for General Duty trade in Armed forces. Indian Army Soldier Clerks Examination for clerical post. Whereas Indian Army Soldier Technical (M.E.R) examination for technical and Indian Army Soldier Nursing Assistants (M.E.R) examination for nursing staff.

3. Police Force –

Students who have completed class 10, can also join the police force. One can join as constable (tradesman) in Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) after completion of the matriculation examination. Recruitment as a constable is doneon the basis of physical and written tests.

4. Railway –

Indian Railways is the seventh-largest utility or commercial employer across the world with a workforce of about 1.4 million employees. Students after completion of matriculation can also opt for jobs in the railway sector. Indian Railways recruit candidates after completion of matriculation for positions under Group C and Group D staff including the post of manual and technical work like act apprentice, welder, fitter, carpenter, maintainers, technician Gr- III and others.

5. Staff Selection Commission (SSC) –

SSC is a premier recruitment agency for the Central Government of India. After the completion of class 10, candidates can join SSC. Posts include multitasking staff, lower division clerks, and data entry operators. The candidates are selected on the basis of examination of SSC CHSL (Combined Matric Level/Higher Secondary Level) is conducted annually by the SSC to hire candidates.

Some other interesting options include –

Intermediate –

After matriculation, Students can further go for intermediate. There are three streams in intermediate. Science has two branches, First Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCM) and Second Physics, Chemistry, Biology. Students can also choose PCMB which include biology with PCM. For commerce, students can select their basic subjects with optional. Same goes for Arts or Humanities. Optional subjects vary as per the educational board, they include Computer Science, Hindi, Physical Education, Economics, Maths for Commerce and Biology students, etc.

Polytechnic –

After class 10, students can also go for Polytechnic courses in disciplines Mechanical, Civil, Chemicals, Computer, Automobile. Polytechnic colleges offer 3-year diploma courses.

Paramedical –

Students who have completed the matriculation examination can also take up paramedical courses.  Paramedical courses include DMLT (Diploma in Medical Labotay Technology), DOA (Diploma in Ophthalmic Assistant), DOT( Diploma in Ophthalmic Technology).

Short term courses –

After matriculation, students can also take up short terms courses like Tally, DTP, diploma on computer application, certificate courses in web designing. Students can also select graphics, certificate course in SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Besides this, students can also opt for a certificate programme. Several programmes in MS-Office, Diploma in 2D and 3D animation, programming language (JAVA, C, C++) etc are available. Duration of this course can vary between 3 months, 6 months and 12 months. These courses aim to arm the candidates with vocational skills.

Jewellery Designing-

Those students who want to take up jewellery designing as a career can opt for Jewellery Designing courses after 10 board exams

Animation –

Students can choose a career in multimedia, after class 10. This course includes 2D Animation, 3D Animation, graphics designing and web designing. Students can opt for a diploma in animation after 10th standard.
