The UGC Academic Calendar was announced in the month of April

The delay in the academic session will influence the next academic session as well. However, there is no final decision from the Ministry of Home Affairs on the physical reopening of Colleges or universities. The earlier Academic calendar was announced during the month of April regarding studies, exams, and reopening. They planned to open the institutes by September. However, the sessions have been delayed till November in view of the increase in COVID cases rising in India.

Relief to parents

They have also given the order to relieve parents who are facing financial hardship due to lockdown. Universities and colleges will make a full refund of fee of admission by 30 November 2020, as a special case for this session. They will even refund the entry fees including all charges. The entire fee will be refunded on cancellation or withdrawal of a student’s admission up to December 31, 2020. Universities or colleges cannot deduct more than Rs. 1000 as a processing fee.
UGC stated “To be crystal clear, the entire fees including all charges will be refunded in totality (Zero cancellation charges) on account of cancellation/ migration up to 30.11.2020. Thereafter, on cancellation/ withdrawal of admissions up to 31.12.2020, the entire fee from a student will be refunded in full after deduction of not more than Rs. 1000 as processing fee.”

Union Education minister Ramesh Pokriyal Nishank Tweeted, “In the view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the commission has accepted the report of the committee and approved the @ugc_india Guidelines on academic Calendar for the first year of Under-Graduate and Postgraduate students of Universities for the session 2020-21.”

SSLC supplementary exams

The SSLC Board on Monday started supplementary exams for more than 2.1 lakh students. The first paper was maths. COVID care centers are there for the COVID positive students. There were no students appearing in the exam conducted by the board.

No vacations

To compensate for the loss of academic time, UGC has ordered Colleges and Universities to run classes for six days. They have even asked to move the session forward without any summer or winter break for two academic sessions.
According to the online news portal The Print, UGC communicated this to the colleges. It states, “The start of the first year of academic session 2020-2021 lagged due to the circumstances beyond control. The board has made efforts to compensate for the loss of this period. To fulfil this it has curtailed the breaks (Summer, Winter, etc). This will ensure the timely completion of their 3-years UG/PG program.”
They further added, “All the Universities may follow a 6-day pattern for the academic session 2020-21 and 202-2022 to compensate the loss of students.”
