‘Wonder Woman 1984’ to release on HBO Max and theatres

Gal Gadot’s “Wonder Woman 1984” is all set to launch on Christmas this year. Warner Bros. have announced the debut of the ‘Wonder Woman’ sequel on streaming service HBO Max and in U.S. movie theatres as well. Globally, where HBO Max is unavailable, the production has decided to premiere the movie a week earlier i.e. on December 16. Moreover it’s a great decision by makers to stream the film on HBO Max for a month at no additional cost to subscribers.

Delayed Release amid Pandemic

“Wonder Woman 1984” was expected to be one of the biggest movies of 2020. In fact, makers were speculating ticket sales to surpass $1 billion. The film was decided to be launched in theatres this past summer. However, coronavirus outburst and its long spread kept hindering the film release. Ann Sarnoff, CEO of Warner Media Studios and Networks Group said, “The film is amazing that really comes to life on big screen. So, we are working with our partners to provide option to U.S. consumers where theatres are open. We also realise that many can’t go back to theatres due to pandemic, thus we have launched the option of HBO Max platform for them.”

About “Wonder Woman” series hype

“Wonder Woman” was a massive commercial as well as critical hit in 2017. It generated more than $800 million at the international box office. The film portrayed a female superhero which itself is a rare subject in comic book movies. And this is one of the reasons, it became Warner Bros.’ one of the biggest hit property. It is also signified as a cultural touchstone.

The upcoming film picks up with Gal Gadot’s Amazonian warrior during the Cold war. Here she battles with two formidable foes- Maxwell Lord(Pedro Pascal) and Cheetah(Kristen Wiig), while reuniting with her past love, Steve Trevor(Chris Pine). The cast includes Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen too.

Films skipping theatres and opting for Digital releases

Many U.S. films were scheduled to release in theatres but in order to deal with the situation, makers had to move to Digital platforms. Big Films such as Blue Story, My Spy, The Quarry, Irresistible are among them. However, HBO Max has always struggled to compete against Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney Plus. But with the announcement of Wonder woman stream on the channel, owners hope to get a rush of subscribers. HBO costs $15 a month.
