Google’s video streaming platform YouTube went down globally on 11 November. Millions of users globally suffered from the outage. The outage came to the light of YouTube officials after several users started complaining on social media pages. On Twitter, #YouTubeDown started trending and consequently, memes came flooding into users’ social media feed.
Users facing buffering issue
Several users shared buffering issues as a result of the outage. Also, a large number of users shared screenshots of their issues on Twitter. On Twitter, some users were sharing screenshots of videos buffering whereas others shared an error message appearing on their screen.
After the outrage posts began to trend on Twitter, it caught the attention of YouTube officials. “If you’re having trouble watching videos on YouTube right now, you’re not alone – our team is aware of the issue and working on a fix. We’ll follow up here with any updates,” YouTube’s official handle tweeted.
The issue was resolved within hours but till then lakhs of users had already filled the social media feeds.
Downdetector a website which monitors outage around the globe reports that more than 2 lakh users have reported about the outage. In India, the maximum number of outage reports came at 6:39 AM when more than 3000 people were reporting the glitch in YouTube on Downdetector’s website.
Moreover, the data on Downdetector website shows that North America had a major effect, with some parts of Europe, Asia and Australia also witnessing the issue.
Other services using YouTube infrastructures affected
Reports online said that due to the malfunction in YouTube other services using their infrastructure were facing issues. YouTube TV, movies, and movies purchased via Google TV use the YouTube infrastructure for streaming videos. These platforms were tremendiusly affected by the glitch in the system. They had to suffer the consequences as YouTube went down globally.
